Abstract

This is a bibliographic research, in an essay format, which proposes to remind the literary indications contained in O. Rank’s article on the double. It starts from the discussion of the film The student from Prague, whose script is a rhapsody of literary motives on this theme. The influence of the works cited by Rank on psychoanalytic metapsychology is questioned, especially for the development of the concepts of narcissism, uncanny and fantasy. From these literary references, the implications of the phenomenon of the double for the approach of current clinical themes are pointed out: the dynamics of delusional constructions in psychoses, the passage to the act and the acting-out and the specifics of the mourning work. It is argued that Rank’s essay demonstrates the power that clinical research can acquire by intensifying the dialogue with the literature.
