Abstract

This work proposes a theoretical-methodological model for the analysis of adult trajectories within developmental psychology. The model integrates the Trajectory Equifinality Model (TEM) and the Dialogical Self System Theory (DSST) and is explained through the presentation of a case study, one of the six studies elaborated in a research project on aging in which participated six middle aged women who were the primary caregivers of elderly family members diagnosed with dementia. The procedures adopted were individual interview, genogram, autobiographical mandala, and focus group. Results pointed out that the transition to the role of caregivers, the equifinality point shared by participants, was differently conceived by each of them and functioned as a catalyzer of novel developmental processes and self-projections that guided them towards the future. Then, the paper elaborates on the heuristic value of the proposed model considering the field of adult development and life course studies.
