Abstract

This work aims to make a comparative study between the Greek play “Oedipus the King” (2006) and the Brazilian play, “Black Angel” (2021), in order to understand the influencing movements that the classics still exert in contemporary works, as well as the innovative processes in the contemporary tragic play. Furthermore, this work aims to investigate how the tragic construction takes place in both cases. For that, a previous reading of the two pieces was made and then a bibliographical study, composed by Aristotle (2017) and Adilson dos Santos (2005). The analysis made here was based on the description of the elements that constitute a tragedy. Then, each piece analyzed was described separately, considering the aspects that make them considered as tragedies. Afterwards, a proper comparison was made between both texts, seeking to observe how the tragic was constructed in each case and how the heroes in each play were constructed. In conclusion, we can see that Nelson Rodrigues' play has many similarities with Sophocles', which allows us to state that the Brazilian author was influenced, to some extent, by the Greek author. However, points of divergence between both plays were also pointed out, mainly regarding the construction of the hero and the construction of the tragic.
