Abstract

            It is intended to instigate discussions about the relationship recorded in history between national heritage, eclecticism, and modernism. Starting from widely disseminated discourses, such as the criticism of the modern movement to eclecticism and the initial practices of official preservation of the heritage, a relationship is established between some corresponding bibliographies to understand the theme and compare it with the architectural context in Bocaina, a city in the interior of São Paulo State widely marked by eclectic architecture, considerably preserved even without the support of the tombamento.
