La Poétique de l'Espace (1958) is one of the most important works of Gaston Bachelard's imaginary phase: it presents his mature theses, which constitute his definitive perspective on the question of the poetic image. When the text was translated into English, the editor asked Étienne Gilson, who was Bachelard's colleague and one of the greatest historians of French philosophy, to write a small preface. In this preface, Gilson describes the surprise caused by Bachelard's "aesthetic turn", and holds that the methodological principles created by the philosopher inaugurate a new era in the studies of the philosophy of art. This text is the Portuguese's translation of Gilson's preface.
