Abstract

Among the various distance learning environments, Moodle is the most widely used. However, despite being a very complete and flexible platform for distance education it does not have user-friendly tools that teachers can assess the student’s interactions disposing only a module to display the usage logs. The VAFAE – Forum Access Visualization on a Distance Learning Environment is a web tool that visually maps the data and their respective numerical analysis. In a more specific way, VAFAE aims to help teachers to better understand the level and quality of the interaction of the students with the modules of the learning units in a distance learning environment. This article sums up the similar tools already available, explains some concepts of information visualization theory and finally explains how VAFAE was built and the technologies used.

Cláudio Filipe da Silva Tereso

Licenciado em Informática pela Universidade Aberta e é possuidor de várias certificações Microsoft tendo alcançado o estatuto de MCSE e MCDA, entre outros. Aos 10 anos programava para o Spectrum, na década de 90 teve programas publicados na extinta revista Spooler e é autor dos livros “Redes Locais em Windows 98 & 95” e “Redes Locais em Windows 98 & Me ” editados pela FCA. Tem como áreas de interesse a estatística, visualização de informação e inteligência artificial.

Elizabeth Simão Carvalho, Universidade Aberta

investigadora do CIAC—Centro de Investigação em Artes e Comunicação e docente no DCeT – Departamento de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Aberta. Ela é doutorada em Tecnologias e Sistemas de Informação e mestre em Ciências da Computação, ambos pela Universidade do Minho, Portugal, e licenciada em Engenharia Eletrotécnica pela Universidade Veiga de Almeida, Brasil. Tem como principais interesses de investigação as áreas de visualização de informação e científica.
