The article presents the compost bin as a methodological and participatory element for teaching by areas. The Rural Education course at the Federal University of Santa Catarina provided the opportunity to prove this hypothesis. Given the assumptions of this course, this work aims to present a teaching proposal aligned with the Freirean perspective, using the compost bin as a suggestion for the area of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, reflecting on the potential it offers. The experience was applied in high school, through a perspective by area of knowledge and remote. The work is divided into three moments which are: the first, specific approaches and discussions on the theoretical foundations; the second, about the methodology, deepening the general proposal of the work and understanding the themes and approaches it provides; and the third, which reports the experience, bringing it as a practical proposal for the teaching practicum. The result shows us that working in na interdisciplinar way, from áreas of knowledge, provides educators wth greater engagement with each other, as they need to plan and think about actions togheter and for students, dialogical education can provide a holistic approach that does not exist in the method banking: the view that disciplines are connected, talk about everyday things and are presente in your everyday life.
