The objective of this paper is to present the paths taken by the translators during the translation process of the short story “He had dreamed of returning”, written by the Arab-American author Pauline Kaldas. It sought to point out how the cultural context is relevant to decision-making during the process, as well as how the choices are part of a creative exercise. Eight excerpts were chosen for analysis, in which we highlight those that were more challenging and required more research and reflection, including some lexical choices and idiomatic expressions considered more familiar to the Portuguese-speaking reader. It is noteworthy that the translators were constantly attentive to the text’s fluidity, as well as to the maintenance of the original text’s aesthetics.
