Abstract

This experience report addresses the inclusion of medical students as extensionists in a tertiary health service, highlighting the impact on academic training and hospital services. University extension is a fundamental part of the academic triad, which includes teaching and research, connecting university and community. In the field of medicine, the participation of students in tertiary environments, such as hospit als, benefits both academic training and the hospital community. This article reports on the experience of the “Backaus Project: Students in Action,” developed by medical students from PUC Minas at the Regional Public Hospital of Betim (HPRB). Since 2023, the project has involved 26 extensionists who work in the surgical unit and outpatient clinic, aiming to apply the WHO’s safe surgery protocol. The experience covers all phases of surgical care: pre, intra, and post - operative, ensuring patient safety and improving the quality of care. The results indicate that the use of the Safe Surgery Checklist promoted the standardization of processes and the reduction of errors, resulting in more qualified and safer care. The extension experience has proven crucial for the technical and humanistic development of future doctors, highlighting the importance of integrating the university with health services. The project also aligns with initiatives such as ERAS and ACERTO, which aim to speed up patient recovery and reduce postoperative complications. Thus, the “Backaus Project” stands out as an exemplary practice of how university extension can contribute to a comprehensive and humanized medical education, benefiting both students and the hospital community.
