Abstract

This paper aims to comprehend the impacts of the British colonial policies for educating the colonized people on their identity building movement. The following analysis starts from the Freirean perspective of education to shine light on the oppressive relationship inherent to the colonization process. Moreover, Claude Dubar’s sociological theory on identity is used as theoretical subsidy in order to understand how the identities are formed through a relational perspective of the self and other considering the goal behind the British Empire’s need to educate the peoples under its domain. Therefore, a case study of the territory currently known as Nigeria was developed in order to illustrate such effects.
