O Ano de 1993: Eros as Resistance in the Prelude to the Saramaguian Fiction
eros como resistência no prelúdio da ficção saramaguiana
Abstract
Abstract: The last work from the Saramaguian poetry phase, O ano de 1993 (1975) narrates the journey of people against persecution and violence brought on by authoritarian forces, which are responsible for controlling and submitting the same people to hostility. However, they resist and try to engage in a collective battle so as to regain their rightful place. One of the elements which are figurativized as a supporting force is love, particularly the love related to eroticism. Moreover, the body itself functions subtly as a means of protection and relief. Based on that, this article aims to identify and analyze the love and the sex in O ano de 1993, with special interest in both the thematic and figurative constructions, and in the emergency of uncanny effects related to the events. For this purpose, we use the discursive semiotics, developed by Algirdas Julien Greimas, as theoretical ground, especially the discursive level. That being said, the works of Greimas and Courtés (2008), José Luiz Fiorin (2008), Diana Luz Pessoa de Barros (2005) are considered fundamental. Besides, the literary references based on Carlos Reis (2018), Horácio Costa (2020), Juan Arias (2003) e Octavio Paz (1994) are valuable to the critical and analytical conception of this article.
