Abstract
O concílio ecumênico Vaticano II completa 50 anos de abertura. Recordando o fato, este artigo começa por apresentar o que seja um concílio ecumênico, baseando-se na teologia e na história. Em seguida, expõe o Vaticano II, situando-o no horizonte da vida da Igreja o que inclui os antecedentes imediatos, a convocação, preparação, embates, características do concílio e dificuldades do pós-concílio. Por último, são apresentadas as quatro constituições conciliares, cada uma com o tema próprio: a constituição sobre a liturgia, a constituição dogmática sobre a Igreja, a constituição dogmática sobre a Palavra de Deus, a constituição pastoral sobre a Igreja no mundo,
destacando alguns de seus pontos principais, bem como as perspectivas abertas por elas e até agora assumidas ou não pela Igreja.
