THE PERFORMANCE OF PROFESSIONAL INTERPRETERS OF SIGN LANGUAGE IN CLASSROOM

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This paper presents a study that aimed to understand the role of the Libras interpreter in the classroom context. Seeking to understand with the professionals what kind of work they do in the classroom. The literature review discussed Law No. 10436 of April 24, which decrees the Brazilian Sign Language - Libras and its importance in including the deaf person. The activity of the interpreter translator of the Brazilian Sign Language-LIBRAS was regulated by Law No. 12,319, since September 1, 2010, thus ensuring in public spaces the right of the deaf to have a Libras interpreter. In the literature review, we discussed the role of the interpreter translator according to the author Quadros (2007) and the history of the constitution of the professional interpreter of Libras. About the Brazilian Sign Language - Libras, the contributions of the authors Gesser (2009), Pizzio (2006) and Brito (1997) were used. In order to achieve the proposed objectives, a qualitative research was conducted, which included the participation of Libras interpreters working in Public Schools. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather data on the role of the Libras interpreter in the classroom. To analyze the collected data was made the content analysis. The results of this study revealed some of the Libras interpreter's work in the classroom. It is of great importance that the Libras interpreter is fluent and skilled and also has understanding of the deaf person and their identity.
