FROM ANXIETY TO ANGUISH:

POSSIBLE PATHS BETWEEN PSYCHOPATHOLOGY AND PSYCHOANALYSIS

Abstract

The research entitled From anxiety to anguish: possible paths between psychopathology and psychoanalysis, funded by the UEMG Institutional Research Support Program (PAPq),  aims to carry out a critical-comparative analysis between the diagnostic criteria for Anxiety Disorders (AD) in force in the DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). ) with the psychoanalytic perspective on anguish by Sigmund Freud and Jaques Lacan, with a view to discussing the impasses and possibilities of psychoanalytic work in the face of the contemporary market demand for the medicalization of psychological suffering. From a general psychopathology to a fundamental psychopathology, there is a pendulum movement that oscillates between these two perspectives in which one is based on a diagnostic approach based on biological and cognitive aspects, diagnostic categories, the classification system of the DSM and the ICD (Statistical Classification). On the other hand, we have a diagnostic approach that is concerned with considering the meaning of the symptom, the subjective aspects, the affects, the psychic dynamics, the social and economic aspects of the health-disease process. The normative character of the DSM classification is based on a strong tendency to classify psychological suffering, within a clearly taxonomic logic that excludes the subject determined by language. This, to the detriment of the right to narrate his story, his discomfort, his suffering, thus being able to be elevated to the position of subject by taking responsibility for what he says, is subsumed to the position of object of observation.
