Abstract

This article seeks to discuss the role of symbolic play in children's cognitive/emotional development through the analysis of the character "Bing Bong", the imaginary friend of Riley, the protagonist in the animated film "Inside Out". The movie is analyzed through Vygostky's concepts of experience in art, superior psychological functions, imagination and creation. As a methodological strategy, this article used clippings from the movie, opting for clippings that contemplate the direct or indirect appearances of the analysed character. Such clippings point out to the essential nature of symbolic play in the development of cognitive-behavioral skills. It was possible to observe Riley's reframing processes and the role of Bing Bong in this journey, whose concept of experience applies in a convergent way with the other concepts worked on in the analysis.
