Abstract

In this article, I intend to point out the different religious beliefs present in the book Grande Sertão: Veredas (1956), by João Guimarães Rosa, presented through the narration of the protagonist Riobaldo, and how he lived harmoniously with this syncretic reality. The intention is to demonstrate, without theological or philosophical commitment, that the Rosian novel leads us to reflect on the hybridity inherent to the human essence. The proposal is to rehearse a reading of how Rosa, in this novel of formation, shows us the identity constitution of the faith of the hero Riobaldo, a country man who moved naturally between popular sayings, omens, Catholic, Spiritist and Protestant precepts, something so characteristic of culture of the Brazilian people.
