Abstract

This article has investigated, under the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics, more specifically, using the concept of image schemas, the grammaticalization process undergone by five verbs in the Portuguese language that originally express the notion of movement. It has explored the hypothesis that the image schemas found in the conceptualization of those verbs can explain some syntactic-semantic constraints identified in the periphrastic constructions resulting from this grammaticalization. The diachronic analysis carried out showed that, differently from the [V1sair (go out) + V2gerund] periphrasis, that was grammaticalized only in the classical period of the language, andar(walk), ir(go), vir(come) and viver(live) were already functioning as aspectual auxiliaries when combined with a gerund form since the 13th century. It has also been observed that the SOURCE-PATH-GOAL schema is a positive constraint for the verb of movement to be reanalyzed into an auxiliary verb in a construction in which V2 is gerund, apart from the fact that the combination of two image schemas act as a negative constraint on the process of reanalysis, slowing down the grammaticalization course of this auxiliary verb.
