This study discusses compulsory heterosexuality and the inscription of plural lesbian existences through an analysis of the short story “Grandma, are you a lesbian?” by author Natalia Borges Polesso. Based on three analytical axes, we aim to understand how the author, through the construction of the characters Joana and Grandma Clarissa, brings into play discussions such as lesbianism, compulsory heterosexuality, and the family. To this end, we have drawn on gender theories and discussions of lesbianism, such as those coined by Miskolci (2017), Sedgwick (2016), and Rich (2010), as well as analyses of contemporary Brazilian literature and lesbianities by Facco (2004) and Figueiredo (2020). By interweaving these theorists, we analyze how the construction of these characters formalizes other, more plural, and diverse lesbian inscriptions in contemporary Brazilian literature, contributing to the dissemination of dissident narratives.
Keywords: Contemporary Brazilian literature. lesbianities. Compulsory heterosexuality. Family.
