Different perspectives of women in O mameluco (1882), by Amélia Rodrigues

Abstract

This article aims to analyse the different compositions of the female figure in the novel O mameluco (1882), by Amélia Rodrigues, published in the Bahian periodical Echo Sant'amarense. To this end, the bibliographical research was based on theoretical contributions on the history of women during the 19th century, in Brazil and abroad, such as Maria Ângela D'Incao (2004), Elisa Maria Verona (2013) and Elaine Showalter (1994); as well as studies that have highlighted the construction of female characters in 19th century Brazilian novels, such as Silvana Lopes (2011), among others. In short, the research can reveal how discursive constructions about women go through the field of differences based on different determinants such as social and economic class, ethnicity/race and nationality/ancestry, especially in a society marked by a segregationist and hierarchical system.
