Abstract

The process of nominating urban cultural sites in the late 1930s in Brazil was a novelty. It initially transformed the old towns of Minas Gerais into idealized objects within a conservation practice whose aim was to maintain the homogeneity of urban spaces. This new development eventually led to new reproduction processes for these towns that had interfered in their socio-spatial practices, transforming the relationship between their inhabitants and territory. This paper investigates issues related to the transformation of Mariana, Minas Gerais, into a heritage-city. Besides the centralizing and authoritative actions that defined how cultural heritage institutions and agents’ actions and relationship with the municipality, which have already been extensively analyzed, we also show how the community itself worked within this complex scenario.
