The program Minha Casa, Meu Maranhão, has proven itself a public policy that is not aligned with the rural way of living and is notably focused on producing in a way to meet the interest of the capital. This study aims to analyze some of the contradictions within this program, such as its messianic character, identified in its attempt to bring “dignified” housing to its participants. We noticed an attempt to erase the traditional construction techniques of the empiric field we analyzed, denominated here as vernacular. Therefore, we aim to discuss these contradictions by dialoguing with Ivan Illich’s concept of needs and based on a field research by the author in the village of Pequizeiro, in the city of Belágua, Maranhão, from 2016 to 2020.
