The proposed study is about public education specialized in teacher education for the labor market in the First Republic in Brazil. In general, it is intended to explain the reasons that led to the establishment in the national territory of the normal schools, largely due to the change in the legislation that gave the states and municipalities great autonomy for their organizations. Specifically, we seek the social, economic and cultural reasons that led to the experience of a normal municipal school in the city of Serro / MG subsidized by the state government. We study the daily school life, the conflicts between the local government and its principals, as well as demonstrate the ideologies that permeated the public education in that context, especially ultramontanism and positivism. The method is bibliographic research in public and private archives, as well as the use of scarce literature on the subject. The expected result is the demonstration of what was the experience of a normal school in the interior of Brazil with its peculiar actors, conflicts and context.
