SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN SOCIETIES IMPACTED BY MINING:

A formative experience in Miguel Burnier/MG

Abstract

 This experience report shares a pedagogical practice adopted in the Accounting Sciences program at PUC Minas, in the virtual modality, aimed at developing university students' communication skills and active citizenship through the critical analysis of the case of Miguel Burnier/MG, a district historically impacted by mining. The educational strategy was based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), integrating digital tools, thematic forums, and personas representing local social actors. The initiative fostered academic engagement, content appropriation, systemic thinking, and dialogue on socio-environmental justice, contributing to reflection on the role of university outreach in vulnerable territories. The experience demonstrates how higher education can promote environmental awareness and student protagonism in real and sensitive contexts, through digital resources that encourage social representation and highlight the relevance of professional action for the collective, in favor of sustainable economic development.
