Social factors related to the attitudes of Iranians towards Afghan immigrants residing in Iran

Summary

This research examines the factors influencing the attitude of Iranian citizens towards Afghan immigrants. The study is of an applied nature in terms of objective and large-scale, using a descriptive-explanatory research method. Data were collected through a questionnaire designed by the researcher based on the Likert scale. The statistical population consisted of Iranian citizens, of whom 384 were selected as a sample using the Cochran formula and a three-stage sampling method (cluster, systematic and random). Data analysis was performed using SPSS software. The results showed that the average attitude of Iranian citizens towards Afghan immigrants is at an average level, both theoretically and observationally. Among the contextual variables, gender and occupation showed significant differences in relation to the attitude variable, while age, education, income and expenditure did not show significant differences, despite the differences in the means. Furthermore, social harms, media propaganda and normative beliefs showed a negative and significant relationship with citizens' attitude, while no relationship was observed between the expectation of benefits from the presence of immigrants and citizens' attitude. The results of the regression analysis indicated that these variables explain more than 19% of the variations in the dependent variable.
