The Essence and Purpose of Christian Patristic Education
Main Article Content
Abstract
In this research we intend to capture the role that Christian preaching played, throughout the patristic period, in the spread of the Gospel. In the continuation of the evangelization carried out by the Apostles, the Fathers of the Church assumed the inheritance of the missionary imperative given by Christ: the catechumenate crystallizes as an ecclesial institution in the Church of the 19th century. III (catechumenoi in the east, and audientes in the west), but receives the inheritance of a process of evangelization whose roots extend not only to the mission carried out by the Apostles themselves, but also to the the evangelizing mission of Jesus himself. For all this, in the early centuries, we cannot dissociate the concepts of preaching and education. We will focus our attention on the figure of Saint Augustine, emphasizing, on the one hand, his contribution to laying the theoretical and practical foundations of the sacred oratory as pastor and educator. His life, his preaching, his writings made St. Augustine the educator of the West, whose matrix will definitely mark the future of christianity.
