Monolitheism: a Concept of God in 2001 A Space Odissey

Abstract
The paper articulates science fiction genre according to the dossier’s theme on Religion and Cinema. For this task, the paper searches for a concept of God in 2001 A Space Odyssey based on a statement by director Stanley Kubrick. Initially, a common background for religion and science fiction are assumed, for both narratives engage in a larger distinguished event. In the film, apart from religious confessionalism, beyond technology and science, fiction itself emancipates finitude and determinations through infinite symbols. The protagonist – the movie main symbol – is the Monolith: a source of reflection for a concept of God distinct from monotheistic religious traditions. As a metaphor for humanity’s journey, the neologism monolitheism suggests a search for self-understanding through ultimate meanings in Kubrick’s artistic expression of circularity, linearity and, above all, silence. Despite a critical analysis of cinematographic language, especially from Deleuze, the research method is hermeneutic, and the selected bibliographic reference includes works of both philosophical and cinematographic criticism.
