Influence of the angel Gabriel in the constitution of the spiritual being of Jesus according to Ibn ‘Arabī

Abstract

In Ibn ‘Arabī’s thought, Jesus’s constitution depends on his maternal and paternal heritage. The angel Gabriel takes the role of father because of his appearance to Mary and because he is the bearer of a “Spirit proceeding from God”. In this article we discuss the inheritance Jesus receives from the angel and the repercussions that this encounter of a human mother and an angelic spirit will have on Jesus’s being. Jesus will be a dual being whose spiritual aspect will prevail as Gabriel’s “imaginal water” takes precedence over Mary’s “real water”. Jesus will be half human and half spirit. His “Christology” is fully Islamic, but is close to Docetism, without being identified with it. Jesus will appear as a man, even if he is a spirit, and, so, he will be able to perform miracles of vivification. According to the Great Sufi master, every prophet discloses one aspect of God. Regarding to Jesus, he is the embodiment of the divine Breath.
