Abstract
The present work aims to give visibility to the memories related to the trajectory of Catholicism in the region known as Várzea, at the city of Pelotas, located in the south of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The contextualization is defined through the analysis of strategies of sociability used by the Jesuit priest Pedro Balduíno Rambo. He had a very particular charisma, recognized thanks to his concern with the poor people, marking, in the 1950s, the genesis, history and religious feeling of the Várzea district and the neighborhood of Our Lady of Fatima. Regarding the sources, the research used documents from the Archdiocese of Pelotas, the Livro do Tombo of the Parish of Our Lady of Fatima (1965) and the work by Father Viriato Bodas (1986), as well as ancient photographs, journals and testimonies of former residents of the neighborhood, collected between March and April 2016 through the methodology of oral history. The contributions of Father Rambo to the constitution of this neighborhood, his way of socialization, of linking religiosity to diverse social motivations, remain alive in the memory of those who have witnessed his short priesthood in this parish and who can reproduce those times today.
