THE INTERPRETATION IN THE BRAZILIAN ADVENTIST CHURCH OF THE ECUMENICAL CONCILIAR THEOLOGY the Vatican II and the ecumenism in the pages of the Revista Adventista (1962-1965)

Abstract

The history of the Brazilian adventist press begins with the publication, in 1904, of the first periodical printed in Portuguese of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, O arauto da verdade – emergence that some scholars of the history of adventism in Brazil believe to occur in 1900. In 1906, comes up the so-called Revista Trimensal, now called the Revista Adventista, name adopted in March 1931. On the cover, it was identified as the ‘official organ’ of the Brazilian Church of seventh-day adventists, designation that continued until 1974. Considered ‘general organ’ of the denomination in Brazilian lands since 1975, the Revista Adventista's main objective is to report on the most significant events in the adventist world and Christianity in Brazil and in the world. The publication has a digital collection available on the Internet, which contains all the issues of the periodical, since its first edition in 1906 – from which the research of sources and analyzes exposed in the present text comes, that approaches how the magazine reported conciliar ecumenical theology. Nine editions, published between 1962 and 1965, where the terms 'Second Vatican Council' – and correlates – and 'ecumenism' are found, were analysed. The research is justified by the novelty of an investigation into the interpretation of the council by an organ of the Brazilian Adventist Church. The exam of the selected materials was performed from the concepts of memory, production conditions, paraphrase and polysemy of discourse analysis.
