Abstract

Concerned with the lack of knowledge about the specificities and the meta-theoretical profile of the Science of Religion on the part of a considerable number of Brazilian scholars active in this area, the present text singles out the discipline’s constitutive epistemological and methodological elements. In order to identify these distinguishing principles, the article first draws attention to intellectual and structural aspects instrumental for any scientific endeavor. Subsequently, a summary of the concept of the "second order tradition" prepares a systematic overview of basic elements consensual among scholars of religion since the formative phase of their discipline.
