VIOLENCE, HUMOUR AND RELIGION an analysis of this relation in the secularized liberal state
Main Article Content
Abstract
News of violence in response to jokes about religion and religion-related violence in general has been frequent in the mainstream media, which leads us to seek solutions and possibilities for peaceful coexistence between religious and secular citizens. This interaction will inevitably take place through dialogue between reason and religion. This article aims at reflecting on these possibilities, from the perspective of the philosophers Jürguen Habermas, Giovanni Vattimo and Roger Scruton, the theologian Joseph Ratzinger, and the anthropologist René Girard. The reflection of this article will focus on the importance of the secularized state and its function of containing extremism, as well as on the recognition that Christianity has largely enabled the advent of the secularized state with freedom of religious worship (including atheism). Solutions are proposed throughout the article.
