Abstract

The paper approaches the theme of assistencialism in the spiritism proposals and practices. Despite the effort of this religious group to overcome the assistencialist label , the arguments presented reinforce its maintenance both in the conceptions and in the activities carried out. To show this argument, first, the assistencialism is approached theoretically, to then resort to the documents of the Brazilian Spiritist Federation, which establish guidelines in the assistential area, and two surveys carried out in Santa Catarina. With this set of data, it was possible to observe that, in content and form, the Spiritist assistance work continues predominantly oriented by religious guidelines and concepts, not straying from the assistencialist label.
