VIOLENCE, ACCORDING TO RENÉ GIRARD, IN THE REPORTS OF CAIN AND ABEL, SACRIFICE OF ISAAC AND JOSÉ FROM EGYPT
Main Article Content
Abstract
Sacred Scripture is peculiar in the theme’s treatment of violence, according to René Girard (1923-2015) the biblical texts defend the victims and denounce the violence against them; different from the mythologies that justify the persecution and condemnation of victims. In the Bible, for Girard, God is not an ally of violence as shown, at first, by three texts from the book of Genesis: Cain and Abel (4, 1-24), Sacrifice of Isaac (22, 1-19), and Joseph of Egypt (37-50). This article presents the Girardian reading of these biblical texts, which show the record of the founding murder (Cain and Abel); the trace of human sacrifices (Sacrifice of Isaac) and the stages of the mimetic cycle of violence: persecution and death-expulsion of the victim (Joseph of Egypt). The methodology adopted is bibliographical based on Girard’s work that deal with the violence and its biblical-theological interpretation, concerning the texts from the book of Genesis, with the help of a commentator on the works of René Girard, the entries in a biblical dictionary and directly from the biblical texts. We conclude it is essential to deepen the knowledge of how Sacred Scripture deals with the violence, which is crucial for Christian praxis today.
