Abstract

The present paper aims to present the concept of existential resignification through the mystical experience from a Frommian psychoanalytic analysis of the fictional work The shack. According to psychoanalyst Erich Fromm, the mystical experience can bring about profound changes and improvements in one's personality. This existential reorientation can even provide the subject with a new way of understanding and dealing with the contingencies of life, as it would be the case of loss and suffering arising from that. As a methodological resource, this study will use a theoretical and bibliographic reading of the following works: The shack, by William P. Young; You shall be as Gods; Psychoanalysis and religion, and, finally, The Forgotten language; all of them by Erich Fromm. In addition to these works, the commentators of the aforementioned psychoanalyst will also be used. Finally, it is intended to show that the mystical experience can promote an inner awakening in the individual, thus freeing him/her from a cycle of existential suffering.
