SPIRITUALITY AND MENTAL HEALTH IN PATIENTS IN ONCOLOGICAL POST SURGERY IN HOSPITAL IN NORTHEAST BRAZIL

Abstract
Science shows that religious people better adapt to stress and have better mental health. Furthermore, when it comes to cancer, religious/spiritual coping can help adapt to aspects related to pain and associated mental disorders. Therefore, the present study evaluated the association between spirituality and religious/spiritual coping with mental health in patients following cancer surgery in a reference hospital in Recife-PE. Exploratory, cross-sectional, and quantitative study. It was used: An authorial sociodemographic questionnaire, the adapted CRE-Brief scale, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Spirituality Self-Classification Scale (SSRS). Study approved by the IMIP CEP through opinion 4,556,349. In the sample of 35 patients, the average age of the participants was 58.5 years, the majority being female, from the Recife region, married and of the Catholic/Protestant religion. Symptoms of anxiety were identified in 28.57% and depression in 11.43%. The spirituality-mental health association identified 21 patients with high spirituality and a low probability of anxiety-related symptoms and 26 with high spirituality and low probability of depression-related symptoms. Therefore, the present study points to the importance of religious and spiritual factors in the context of mental health of patients in postoperative oncologic and follow-up studies that are necessary for a more accurate evaluation.
