THE POLYPHONY OF TRUTH: an alvesian understanding of the brazilian political situation (2018)

Abstract
The general objective of this article is to relate the concept of religious fundamentalism with politics in the Brazilian public scene in recent years, choosing as a typical exemplary model the use and abuse that Bolsonaro and Bolsonarism made of the words of Jo 8.32 (“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall you free”). As an integral part of a broader research project, this article focuses on Bolsonaro's first speeches after the result of the second round of elections in 2018. As for methodology, in a critical dialogue with Rubem Alves' corpus, I propose that the truth is polyphonic and that its reduction to a single meaning by any politician with the Bible in hand puts the status of democracy in question. Thus, the meanings of fundamentalism were borrowed from the work and life story of Rubem Alves, and updated by me, with a view to understanding the contemporary Brazilian political scene.
