JOHN XXIII IN PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE: Hannah Arendt’s Reflections on “A Christian on the Throne of Peter”
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article seeks to analyze Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) thinking in relation to the figure of John XXIII, exploring the philosopher's perceptions of Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli as an authentic Christian in the papacy. The German philosopher in her book Men in Dark Times, in which she considers several characters of the 20th century, analyzed the figure of John XXIII, narrating several stories about the Roman Pontiff, in an essay entitled Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli: a Christian on the throne of Peter from 1958 to 1963. Therefore, this article seeks to answer which John XXIII's profile can be traced from Hannah Arendt's considerations. The following article argues in what sense Pope John XXIII is considered by the German thinker as a figure of exemplarity. Through this analysis, the article aims to provide a critical and reflective perspective on Arendt's view of John XXIII as a Christian leader and his legacy in the papacy.
