THEORY AND METHOD IN MATERIAL RELIGION religions studied in their bodily-and-material aspects

Abstract
This article aims to provide more precise outlines regarding a relatively new field of knowledge in Brazilian Religious Studies that has been conventionally called Material Religion. This field includes approaches that seek to study religions in their material and corporeal aspects. They have been gaining popularity in the academic world due to their ability to capture events that are not normally found in textual and discursive studies, but that considerably influence religious dynamics. The approaches can also point to processes of adaptation of religions in the face of challenges imposed by local cultures, as well as by secular material aspects, such as technological changes, ecological disasters, pandemics, as well as issues related to race and gender. In Religious Studies, Material Religion demonstrates that religions are much more immanent and concrete than common sense can imagine, however, without reducing them to a radical materiality.
