Esse artigo trata do comportamento dos católicos em um dos mais tensos momentos da história política brasileira: o golpe civil-militar de 1964. Seu objetivo é demonstrar que o catolicismo não era uma força hegemônica a favor ou contra a supressão da democracia naquele momento. Ele reproduzia as divisões existentes na sociedade ampla. Destacamos que o anticomunismo do período também não era hegemônico dentro do catolicismo. Esse trabalho é resultado de pesquisas realizadas nas cidades de Belo Horizonte e Montes Claros do estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Além da pesquisa documental em arquivos públicos e privados, utilizamos da metodologia da história oral temática.

Abstract
This article is about the position of Catholics in one of the most tense moments of the Brazilian political history: the 1964 Brazilian civil-military. Your goal is to demonstrate that Catholicism was not a hegemonic force for or against the suppression of democracy at that time. He reproduced the divisions within larger society. We emphasize that the anticommunism of the period also was not hegemonic within Catholicism. It is the result of research conducted in the cities of Belo Horizonte and Montes Claros in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Beyond the documentary research in public and private archives, used the methodology of oral history.
