Abstract

The present study aims to investigate whether the aspectual readings of “estar+gerund” periphrasis generate volitional readings in the context of [± animated] subjects in Brazilian Portuguese. Arche (2014) questions the fact that, in the literature, several authors attribute to this periphrasis a volition reading, without explaining how this reading is generated. So, we tested whether the [animacity] feature of the external argument is able to confirm this volition reading of the investigated periphrasis. The assumed hypothesis is that there is no specific volition reading for this periphrasis, but that the aspectual readings are generated in the syntagmatic structure due to the aspectual contribution of different sentence elements. To test this hypothesis, we applied a grammaticality judgment test to ten Brazilian Portuguese speakers. The results show that, even in contexts with [-animated] subjects, speakers mostly associated sentences with interpretations that indicate skill and, consequently, volition.
