Abstract

This excerpt is part of a research project that encompasses converging perspectives on the symbol "mouth" in the figure of Beata Maria de Araújo, a Black woman who marked the history of Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará, with her miracles. The study is linked to a research project focused on identifying historical traces and noise surrounding images of Black women from Ceará. The Beata's story has been obscured and rendered unimportant, condemning her miracle, which from her lips spilled more than blood: it was her non-voice as a Black woman. The question posed is: how does Maria’s mouth become both a sign and a place of communicational experience?  The methodological approach for this study encompasses three stages: contextualization of the Beata’s story from the perspective of intersectionality; observation of a brief selection of images and news articles related to her; and discussion of meanings of the sign "mouth" as a place of communication. Listening to Maria through the traces and what is incommunicable is a way of observing other non-communicable women whose mouths have been sealed.
