Regionalism in South America at the beginning of the 21st Century: an analysis of its practical inflections and of the Brazilian intellectual production

This article identifies the main factors that drive the practical inflections of
regionalism in South America at the beginning of this century and discusses
its main developments and innovations with regard to previous periods. In
addition, it seeks to analyze how this new reality has affected the Brazilian International Relations (IR) intellectual production on this subject. As working
hypotheses, the article supports that the changes observed in regionalism in
South America derive from systemic and internal factors to the region, that does no longer projects its development as the traditional European model of deep regional integration and that there is a preponderance of the thematic that favor political issues of regionalism to the detriment of the economic agenda. In addition to a broad review of the context and the main practical inflections on South American regionalism, the analysis of the Brazilian intellectual production had taken a sample of more than 60 scientific articles that deals with the theme.
