Subinformation is the subtraction of essential data published in news by the press, which makes difficult the construction of a complete picture from a political event. Unlike disinformation, which intentionally misrepresents information in order to deceive and confuse the audience, sub-information conceals important data without attention to the characteristics of factuality and impartiality, typical of the journalistic exercise. In this conceptual distinction, this article argues that the press publishes more subinformation than disinformation, but also that both have a similar impact on public opinion regarding political affairs. As a paradigmatic case, the aim of this exercise is to expose the relationship of the subinformation between the People's Republic of China and the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, in order to know what the subinformative impact of the press is in regional’s public opinion about the Hong Kong protests in 2019. Through a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the most influential news headlines in both regions, useful suggestions are gathered in media literacy on subinformative processes in Latin America in relation to latest political protests and mediation in the press.
