Abstract

What place and what role can religions have in the postindustrial context? Is religious plurality an evil to be eliminated? Is it a negative, sinful reality contrary to God's will? Should it be attributed to the power of the devil, being made up of polytheism, idolatry and immoral practices? What is the sociological, philosophical and theological meaning or meanings of religions today? Although there are many disagreement among analysts of our time regarding the place religion should occupy in this new societal context, there is approval by many interpreters: the claim that religion is an indispensable element of postindustrial societies. Religion is space of articulation of the meaning of life; and is able to perform functions in individual and social life. The plurality of religions is therefore a fact phenomenon. Alongside the major religions, the new religious movements float: evangelical movements; Catholic Charismatic Renovation; community life movements; Finally, linked to the new movements are individual and private religions, religions built on the ideals of modernity and ecology. Add to this whole religious framework what Tillich called the "quasi-religions": humanistic religions of progress, freedom, and equality.
