Orthodox Fundamentalisms and Liberal Democracy: the common good in Aristotle Papanikolaou’s theology

Abstract

Noting that originally fundamentalism is a technical term to describe a certain kind of north American Protestantism, this article recognizes that fundamentalism is applied to wider groups (still in a technical form) to describe various religious groups, and even economic and political systems. This article proposes to discuss the political theology of Aristotle Papanikolaou, an Orthodox theologian, in the context of liberal democracy. The article specifically focuses on his discussion of the common good, which Papanikolaou presents based on the concept of divine-human communion. The political theology of Aristotle Papanikolaou engages with influential theologians from the Orthodox tradition, including Maximus, the Confessor and John Zizioulas. As such, his discussion of the common good is grounded in a theological tradition which investigates the Christian concepts of love and personhood.
