“Acho que nunca passei um minuto do dia me perguntando por que eu realizei este trabalho, ou se valeu à pena. O chamado para proteger a vida – e não apenas a vida, mas a identidade de outra pessoa; talvez não seja demais dizer a alma de outra pessoa – era óbvio em sua sacralidade. Antes de operar o cérebro de um paciente, eu entendi que eu primeiro preciso conhecer a sua mente: sua identidade, seus valores, o que faz a sua vida valer à pena, e que tipo de devastação é razoável para deixar aquela vida terminar”.
