Resumo
Este estudo analisa, por meio das cartas produzidas pelos prelados do século XVIII, o emprego dos ritos litúrgicos e festas oficiais em prol da afirmação da autoridade da Igreja e do Estado na capitania de Minas Gerais. Àquela altura, a engrenagem do governo colonial, que envolveu atividades administrativas, econômicas e militares; não prescindiu de um aparato de representação pública dos poderes. Tratados sobre a doutrinação dos gentios circulavam pela Europa; os ritos e festas oficiais eram regulados pelas Leis do Reino e constituições diocesanas. Deveriam teatralizar a ordem colonial de dominação, produzir admiração, temor e respeito nas pessoas. As autoridades coloniais eram obrigadas a tomar parte nos ritos, de modo a reafirmar a ordem colonial e defender a hierarquia e o domínio dos espaços conquistados.

Abstract
This study examines, through various correspondences in the eighteenth century, the use of liturgical rites and official parties in order to affirming the authority of church of state. Gear colonial involved several activities - administrative, economic and military; but also understood an apparatus of public representation of powers. Treaties about the indoctrination of the gentiles circulated throughoutEurope. The rites and official celebrations were regulated by laws ofkingdom and diocesan constitutions. They should dramatize the colonial order of domination, produce admiration, fear, and respect in people. The colonial authorities were obliged to take part in them; aimed at reaffirm the colonial order and defend to the hierarchy and the domination of the conquered areas.
