Main Article Content
Abstract
This article addresses the development of European studies on Buddhist Tradition between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th. The general aim is to characterize European interpretations of Buddhism. The specific objectives are: to delimit the nature of these readings; characterize the role of a character who provided access to texts; find notions that are keys of interpretation of Europeans in the period for Buddhism. The method used is bibliographic discussion. The text approaches Orientalism initially, focusing on Buddhist Studies; it indicates the participation of a colonial official who sent Buddhist texts to Europe, mentions the search of Europeans for an original Buddhism. Finally, there is a debate about the theory of Buddhism as a discursive object constructed by Europeans..
