Abstract
Este ensaio tem por objetivo apresentar uma leitura antropológica das urnas mortuárias e dos rituais funerários dos índios Tupi-Guarani, com vistas a associá-las ao universo do xamanismo, da guerra e da antropofagia. Com base numa aproximação etnológica com dados arqueológicos e históricos acerca do uso da cerâmica como urnas mortuárias, e por meio de projeções etnográficas, pretende-se discutir a configuração histórico-religiosa na qual as tais urnas estão inseridas. Exploradas no seu contexto, as cerâmicas ricamente entalhadas e usadas como mortalhas permitem identificar nos rituais funerários desses povos uma série de trocas simbólicas entre os diferentes domínios que povoam
o universo real e imaginário. Entre o mundo interior –o nós- e o mundo exterior -os outros-; entre natureza e cultura, entre homens e deuses, há relações e fluxos constantes na forma de trocas, e cujo veículo de transição é a sua religião e o simbolismo a ela inerente, do qual as urnas fazem parte.
