A memorialistic documentary to think about power and gender relations in sport

Abstract

This article seeks to analyze how memory disputes take place in the accounts present in the documentary series "Cheer", released in 2020 by Netflix, addressing issues of gender and power relations present in sport. We understand that the series is configured as a memorial product and, for this reason, the analysis of the material was based on the accounts of memory present in the production. Concepts such as memory, place of memory and disputes over memories are used, as well as discussions on gender and power relations for the discursive analysis of the accounts present in the two seasons. As a result, we identified disputes over meanings, controversies and the crossing of other memories that go beyond the script, enabling an arena of new disputes over the memory of Cheerleading and the series.

Author Biography

Viviane da Silva, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

Master, in the area of Institutional Memory and Strategic Communication (within the Communicative Processes and Social Practices line), through the Postgraduate Program in Social Communication at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). I am a member of the Research Group in Communication, Race, and Gender (Coragem). I hold a degree in Graphic Design Technology from the Universidade Paulista (2015) and a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from the Faculdade de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas at the Federal University of Minas Gerais - Fafich/UFMG (2020). Currently, I work as a Relationship Supervisor at the Associação Comercial e Empresarial de Minas - ACMinas. I have also volunteered for the Federação Mineira de Fundações e Associações de Direito Privado - FUNDAMIG in 2018, participating in communication strategies for the Conferência Conect; and for the Conselho Regional de Relações Públicas Junior - ConrerpJr in 2019. Additionally, I was involved in SEJA! Diversidade, Inovação e Relações Públicas, where I served as an event organizer and graphic designer.
